VIDEO ABOVE: While MLS parity shuffles players throughout the league, talent also moves within clubs. In this Current of Colorado video, watch Sounders homegrown Darwin Jones (#17) dribble through Switchbacks FC in Colorado Springs to score for Sounders 2 on September 17, 2016. Jones is now with the first team, and you can hear Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer describe player movement back in 2015.
The player moves within MLS make it hard for fans to blindly support their clubs. “Cognitive dissonance” is a fancy phrase for the weird anxiety MLS supporters feel when they yell at a fallen opponent to get up even though he wore their team’s colors a season ago and the stretcher crew looks like it’s mobilizing for real. Compassion meets cutthroat, and logic leaves the stadium.
Scroll below to see Keith Cirillo’s photographs from the 1–1 draw at CenturyLink Field on July 20, 2013. Notice how Colorado’s Marc Burch started for Seattle that day, and Nathan Sturgis suited up for Colorado. Sturgis now wears Rave Green, and former Sounders Marco Pappa and Michael Azira wear Burgundy.
The video above concludes with Sounders homegrown Jones working his way deep into the box on his own where Conor Doyle — on loan from the Colorado Rapids — defends him. Switchbacks counter and score, partly due to Doyle’s defending. Current of Colorado knows what you’re thinking.

“I had a man marking me on the previous corners,” Drew Moor recalled. “We had one just before the goal when nobody really marked me. So before the next one, I kind of stepped out of the box hoping nobody would see me. I was able to get by and get the ball from Nick.” Photo by Keith Cirillo.
Nick LaBrocca curled a corner kick tantalizingly out of Andrew Weber’s reach in the 60th minute, a near-Olympico corner-kick goal. “I think I might have stolen one from Nicky there,” Rapids captain Drew Moor said. “I put it away just to be safe. I wasn’t sure if it was going in or not. I think I actually beat the ball to the back of the net.”
